TRIBUTES flowed for jockey Corey Gilby, who died after a track gallop fall at Julia Creek on Saturday.

Gilby, 25, had ridden in every race on the five-event card before the accident in a track gallop after the last race.

He was taken to the local hospital before being airlifted to the intensive care unit at Townsville suffering massive head injuries. His family made the decision to turn off his life support at 9.15pm on Sunday.

Gilby, who listed a win on Adavale Hornet at Doomben in January 2006 as a career highlight, completed his apprenticeship in 2008.

He relocated to Julia Creek only six weeks ago, after linking with local trainer Kerry Krogh.

"He didn't drink, didn't smoke and was a very quiet sort of bloke ... a very nice young bloke," Krogh said.

"He loved anything to do with horses. He would go to work of a morning and afternoon. He was a very, very capable rider and would ride any horses. No horse would phase him.

"He was just a good bloke. Only young, it's very sad."

Gilby had ridden winners from Melbourne to Darwin and many places in between, completing his apprenticeship in 2008.

Gilby is the 11th Australian jockey to die in a race-related fall since 2000.
