STEWARDS were left red faced yesterday when a number of horses ridden by apprentice Mitchell Wood in the past week had to be disqualified because he was allotted an incorrect claim.

Wood outrode his 3kg metropolitan claim when successful on Funny Falve at Doomben on January 18, meaning any mounts he had in the city after January 21 were subject to a 2kg claim only.

However, he still claimed 3kg at Eagle Farm last Wednesday and Doomben on Saturday.

Poor Judge (fourth at Doomben), Red Story (seventh at Doomben) and Florida Fellow (second at Eagle Farm) were all disqualified from their respective races and the placings amended.

The prizemoney won by Poor Judge and Florida Fellow amounted to $4600, but Racing Queensland have agreed to pay connections of those horses that money so they are not affected by the gaffe.

The oversight came about as a result of Wood's win on Dalzar in last year's Listed Sunshine Coast Cup at Caloundra.

The meeting was not metropolitan graded, but for the purpose of calculating apprentice allowances all stakes races count as a win.

Stewards' records showed that Funny Falve was only Wood's 19th win in the city, but with the addition of Dalzar it brought the tally to 20, which instigates the reduction from 3kg to 2kg.
