PATIENCE, some planned and some inflicted, was the key to the dashing win from Conleys Edition at Doomben yesterday.

Trainer Brian Smith did a great job to produce Conleys Edition first up after a nine-month break to overcome a wide barrier to win the Fuji Xerox Plate over 1110m.

The victory was not unexpected. Conleys Edition firmed from $4.40 to $3.40 despite the tough draw.

Owner-breeders Barry and Chris Condon bred Conleys Edition from the Lion Hunter mare Krinkle, who sustained a broken neck as a foal and never raced.

Conleys Edition is the result of the mating of Krinkle with Taimazov and the leggy filly was given time to mature.

She made her debut at Doomben last December when runner-up to Falvalina.

"Unfortunately she had a few bone chips in a knee after that race and we had to send her for an operation so she had to have another long beak," Smith said.

Patinack Farm Racing's Queensland manager Toby Edmonds put a wrap on Upper Class ($13) after she won her second race from as many starts in the LIA Queensland Handicap.

"I think she will turn out the best mare to have raced here at Doomben today. She originally was trained in New Zealand by Roger James but obviously needed a bit of time," Edmonds said.

"She's shown us a fair bit on the track and that is showing up in her races."

Upper Class came from second-last to win comfortably and ran 1.10 for the 1200m, which is clearly not going to be her optimum distance when she gets further into the campaign.
