THE spring campaign of legendary racehorse trainer Bart Cummings has been derailed by a fall at home.

The 12-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer was hospitalised after tripping over and fracturing his pelvis. He was admitted to a Sydney hospital and is unlikely to be discharged until the weekend.

Cummings, 82, had only recently started to get into full swing at his Randwick stables after a bout of pneumonia sidelined him in April.

The Hall of Fame trainer spent several weeks in hospital and lost weight, missing his first Sydney autumn carnival in 50 years. He was forced to leave the task of overseeing trackwork and implementing of his training strategies to his grandson James and stable staff.

Last Saturday, on the day he celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary to his wife Valmae, Cummings produced So You Think to win the Group II Memsie Stakes first-up at Caulfield and he is now favoured to win back-to-back Cox Plates.Cummings has an army of quality stayers preparing for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and will no doubt be anxious to see how they have been graded by handicapper Greg Carpenter, who releases the official weights for the two feature staying handicaps
